The best place to be on a sunny day - or any day

Come visit us – we’re in an historic town on the edge of Dartmoor National Park, in an area of natural beauty. What better place to have fun and keep fit at the same time?

Our pool is heated to a balmy 27 degrees, so the water is warm, whatever the weather - unlike the sea and nearby rivers!

Pool facilities

Changing/shower facilities will be available again this year, along with a tuck-shop.

Our 21-metre heated open-air pool is in the lovely park setting of Victoria Park Buckfastleigh. It provides a safe and fun swimming environment for people of all ages.

There are changing facilities with warm showers and baby changing facilities. We have a tuck-shop, selling hot and cold drinks, sweets, ice-cream snacks and more

There is a sun deck where you can catch some rays and also a covered seating area for spectators.

Please note that currently we are not fully accessible to wheelchair users but we do now have a pool hoist available on request!

Victoria Park

You can spend a full fun day at Victoria Park with its fabulous new skate park and exciting adventure play area. With climbing structures and towers with scramble nets, a crocodile swing, a zip-wire and uniquely designed youth shelters, the park is perfect for a picnic after your swim. So grab some snacks from the tuck shop and relax.

The Hamlyn family, prominent benefactors and original owners of the woollen mills, gave Victoria Park and the swimming pool to the town of Buckfastleigh in 1887 to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria. They also donated money for the Town Hall, community buildings and the playing fields.

The Hamlyn Family wanted the swimming pool and Victoria Park to be an amenity for Buckfastleigh forever, and it was a made a charity held in trust.

History of the pool

For many years, the pool has been an important facility for the town and many residents learned to swim here. It was only closed for a brief period in the Second World War when the US Army took over the park.

Teignbridge District Council took over the trusteeship in 1974 but in 2014 they said they could no longer afford to run the pool. The Friends of Buckfastleigh Pool was set up to save the pool and in 2015 they were awarded a major grant of £75,000 to refurbish the pool. The trusteeship of Victoria Park and the pool was transferred back to the community in April 2015.

The first stage of the pool’s restoration, the relining of the pool, was carried out in April/May 2015 and the pool opened under new management in May 2015. We have ambitious plans to develop the facilities in the upcoming months and are delighted that we have been able to secure the pool’s future for generations to come.

Policies and regulations

We want people to have fun at the pool but we also need to ensure that people are safe. We don’t believe in unnecessary rules and regulations, but here are our main policies:

Child Admission Policy

Children must be supervised at all time by a responsible adult (16+) in and around the pool area.

All children under the age of 8 years must be accompanied into the pool by a responsible adult.

Any children who are weak or non-swimmers should wear suitable recommended buoyancy aids, stay in close contact with the supervising adult and remain in the shallow end at all times.

Parents are requested to ensure that their children wear aqua nappies where appropriate. These are available to purchase from the pool reception.

Admission Guidelines

On busy days there may be queues for admission to public sessions. Once we reach capacity, customers can only be admitted on a one out one in basis.

One carer accompanying a paying person with disabilities will be allowed free admission; however the carer must accompany the person at all times. Staff have the right to ask for proof of disability.
