Hello Summer!

We have a fantastic summer planned for you. From cooking to astronomy, blacksmithing to bouncy inflatable fun, there is something for everyone. Are you arty? There's plenty of drawing and making classes. Or maybe you'd like to try out 3D printing or making arty digital GIFs. Check out the list below and give it a go.


Events and activities will mainly be in Victoria Park or the Town Hall, but some are further afield so check the list below for exact timings and locations. We look forward to seeing you at our summer of fun!


For most activities, you can just show up at the start time.  Some have limited numbers and require advance booking.  For these, scroll down on this page to the activity and then click the link shown to book a place.

Monday 29th July – Elfic the Jester Comes to Town.  Have a go at juggling (balls, rings, clubs), unicycling, stilt walking, diablo, devilstick, plate spinning, poi, and hat manipulation.

Time:  10 am – 12 noon  Location:  Victoria Park  Ages:  All ages welcome


Monday 29th July – The Church on the Hill.  Come and find out about the hill, its caves, ancient animals and ruins.  Explore printing to capture some of its images both past and present.  (You can visit the caves on Monday 5th August)

Time:  2 – 4 pm  Location:  Valiant Soldier  Ages:  4 yrs and upwards.  Must be accompanied by parent or carer


Tuesday 30th July – Colour the Chalk Mural.  Come along and help colour our chalk mural! This year’s mural theme will be ‘Let it Grow! Make a Home for Wildlife in Our Town’.

Time: 10.30 am-12.30  pm  Location: Victoria Park  Ages:  All ages welcome


Wednesday 31st July – Moorfun Inflatables.  Every Wednesday morning the Town Hall will be filled with fun inflatables – come and have a bounce, then enjoy lunch afterwards with Food in Community.

Time:  10.30 am-12.30  pm  Location:  Town Hall  Ages:  All ages up to 12 years welcome.  Children must be accompanied by a parent or carer.


Wednesday 31st July – Cookery and Lunch Club.  Learn delicious and easy recipes to make at home and impress your friends and family.  Then eat what we have made for lunch together with others.  Booking is required – click here

Time:  10 am – 12 noon  Location:  Town Hall  Ages:  5 years and up.  8 years and under must be accompanied.


Thursday 1st August – Story Making.  Join Isabella and her Story Bicycle to make up a story and then tell it to others.

Thursday 1st August – Animal HQ.  A chance to get up close to some beautiful creatures.  Advance booking essential through Buckfastleigh Library

Time:  2 – 4 pm  Location:  Jellyfish Arts Hub  Ages:  All ages welcome


Friday 2nd August – Family Aquafit.  Children and family fun based water exercise session.  Arrive at 10:30 to fill in paperwork for an 11 start in the water running until 12-ish.   Swimming costumes required.

Time:  10.30 am – 12.30  pm  Location:  Buckfastleigh Pool  Ages:  8 – 15 yrs.  Adults (accompanied by a child of 8-15 yrs) encouraged to join in. 


Friday 2nd August – Tea Time Storytelling.  Children and families are invited to Redmount to listen to stories and share cake and conversation with the residents.

Time 2.30 – 4 pm  Location:  Redmount Nursing Home  Ages:  5 years plus and their parents or carers


Saturday 3rd August – Bike Bus Outing to Stover Park

Bring your bikes on the Bike Bus and cycle the Stover Trail from Newton Abbot through Stover Park and Teigngrace Meadow.  This activity costs £5 per person and must be booked in advance:  click here

Time:  Meet 9 am.  Return at 3 pm  Location:  Woodholme Car Park pickup Ages:  All ages welcome with suitable cycling equipment


Saturday 3rd August – Summer Reading Challenge @ Library.  Read about Laika, the first dog in space, then create your very own doggy rocket.

Time:  10 – 11.30 am  Location:  Town Hall  Ages:  All ages welcome


Monday 5th August – Tour of Pengelly Caves & Fossils.  Visit the caves, find out how they were formed and see the remains of the animals that lived there thousands of years ago.

Time:  10.30 am – 12.30 pm  Location:  Pengelly Caves  Ages: All. 10 yrs and under must be accompanied by a parent or carer


Monday 5th August – Wool Gathering.  For hundreds of years people in Buckfastleigh have made their living from processing wool.  Come and try out some wool crafts and spin your own yarn.

Time:  2 – 4 pm  Location:  Valiant Soldier  Ages:  4 yrs and upwards.  Must be accompanied by parent or carer


Tuesday 6th August – Astronomy Adventures.  Take your seat in Dartmoor Skies’ spaceship (some imagination required) and prepare for a voyage through the Solar System. 

Time:  10.30 am – 12.30 pm  Location:  Town Hall  Ages: 3 yrs upwards.  Under 10 yrs must be accompanied by a parent or carer


Tuesday 6th August – Cosmic Space Rockets.  After watching Astronomy Adventures, come and make space rockets with Participate Arts.

Time:  10.30 am – 12.30 pm  Location:  Victoria Park (Town Hall if wet)  Ages: 3 yrs upwards.  Under 10 yrs must be accompanied by a parent or carer

Thursday 8th August – Rabble.  Rabble is a game based, high intensity fitness class – Play games like Dodgeball, Capture the Flag, British Bulldog and many more.  If you’re running around and having a great time, then you’re doing it right! with Claire Windmill.

Friday 9th August – Forging Workshop.  A day of drop in forging with talented blacksmith Spencer Larcombe – have a go working fire and iron!

Time:  10 am-1 pm & 2-5 pm  Location: Victoria Park  Ages:  10 yrs and up


Friday 9th August – Try an Instrument!  Come and experience playing an acoustic instrument in a band! Instruments provided – fiddles, guitars, melodeons and a variety of folk based instruments. Have fun making music together around some of England’s famous folk tunes.  (No previous experience necessary)

Friday 9th August – Family Star Gazing.  Family-friendly talk about meteor showers and then a stargazing and meteor spotting session. Bring warm woollies, chairs or blankets. (Weather dependent – please check on Facebook or here)

Saturday 10th August – Summer Reading Challenge @ Library.  A reading from Roald Dahl’s “Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator” followed by making stupendous space creatures and a crazy cosmos scene.

Monday 12th AugustBoo to a Goose Theatre presents Space Cats.  Two curious kittens, Gumdrop and Spider, discover a spaceship while exploring a secret laboratory… Meanwhile, back on Earth, grandad Houston Collins is wondering why his adventure-hungry kittens are late for supper.

Time:  10.30 am – 12 noon  Location:  Town Hall  Ages:  Up to 10 yrs


Monday 12th August – Invaders!  The Romans were in Exeter and possibly much closer – four Roman coins were found at Dean.  What did they bring with them?  Come and make clay pots with potter Lesley Coulson.

Time:  2 – 4 pm  Location:  Valiant Soldier  Ages:  4 yrs and upwards.  Must be accompanied by parent or carer


Monday 12th August – Working with Wood/1  Have a go at woodwork with the help of craftsman Felix Kary.  Working with wood is an ancient skill and involves patience, calm and confidence to handle sharp tools.  Attend all 3 sessions to have the time to make something great!

Tuesday 13th August – Paddleboat Theatre presents Clare Hollingworth and the Scoop of the Century.  This globe-trotting and playful family show tells the story of journalist Clare Hollingworth’s adventures and discoveries during World War Two.  The show is followed by a storytelling workshop: become a real journalist and delve into local tales and maybe uncover a story or two of your own.

Thursday 15th August – Moving Sound.  A feast of sound, song, story, movement and play.  Come on an enchanting journey of exploration with Caz and Vimmi, discovering different movements and sounds along the way.

Time:  10.30 am – 12 noon     Location:  Town Hall  Ages:  Between 6 yrs and 10 yrs with a parent or carer


Thursday 15th August – Football Fun.  Football fun games and activities for 6 to 12 year olds of any ability. Wear suitable clothing and bring a drink.

Time:  2 – 4.30 pm  Location:  Buckfastleigh Rangers Football Club, Duckspond Pitch  Ages: 6-12 yrs


Friday 16th August – Family Boot Camp.  Children and family fun based park exercise session.  Bring kit to get wet just in case.

Time:  10.30 am – 12.30  pm  Location:  Victoria Park  Ages:  8 – 15 yrs.  Adults (accompanied by a child of 8-15 yrs) encouraged to join in. 


Friday 16th August – Funky Family Rave Up & Funky Headgear and Streamers.  Bring your parents, friends and grandparents, create something wonderful to wear on your head and a colourful streamer to wave to the music with Participate Arts at this family rave up! Funky and groovy tunes, delightful décor and DJ’s. Get on down with all the family! (Alcohol free event).

Saturday 17th August – Summer Reading Challenge @ Library.  A reading from “Aliens Love Underpants”.  Then join us to fashion an array of silly underpants for a host of bonkers aliens.

Monday 19th August – Drawing Games and Doodles.  Join Cara Roxanne for a workshop of fun drawing games.

Monday 19th August – Ghosts from the Granite.  A storytelling and storymaking workshop inspired by Dartmoor legends.  Listen to some of the old stories and then weave your own spine-chilling tale.  A playful and creative workshop with storyteller Sara Hurley.

Time:  2 – 4 pm  Location:  Valiant Soldier  Ages:  4 yrs and upwards.  Must be accompanied by parent or carer


Tuesday 20th August – Sunshine Bag Printing.  Design and print a sunshine logo on a reusable cotton bag with Participate Arts. Yours to take away!

Thursday 22nd August – 3-D Printing Workshop

Using online software young people can design and create a small printed piece to take home. They will learn how to use the software and set up the printer. This aims to give them an insight into this cool, new and exciting technology that is quickly becoming the newest form of design!  Booking is required for this event – click here

Thursday 22nd August – Forest and Nature Skills.  Outdoor games, mini-den building, and lighting cotton wool with fire steels.  Led by Neil Martin.

Friday 23rd August – Felted Pebbles.  Make a beautiful soft felted pebble with Participate Arts

Saturday 24th August – Spin Art.  Participate Arts will bring out the spin art machine for more fun with colourful splattered paint!

Sunday 25th August – All Sing Sunday in the Park.  A drop-in community singsong for all the family led by Fran Andre & Rob Carney.  Bring food to share after the songs are sung.

Tuesday 27th August – Arty Digital GIFs.  Join Cara Roxanne to learn how to make arty digital GIFS (moving pictures).  Participants will need to bring their own phones with an app called “IMG play” downloaded. Booking is required for this event – click here

Friday 30th August – Railway Children Day.  Start the day in the Town Hall watching the classic film, Railway Children.  Then visit the Valiant Soldier to play some of the games children would have played in those years.  And then walk down to the station for a ride on the steam train to Staverton station.  There’s about an hour to explore around Staverton and then it’s back to Buckfastleigh on the steam train.  Booking is required – click here
